As you can guess from the title, it's an autobiographical lockdown animation! Made as an application project for animation school, and my first attempt at using After Effects, so forgive the sloppy compositing!
I was inspired by the flocks of starlings that flew into the trees around our place, where we lived during lockdown. At the same time I felt very isolated, having just moved to a new country, and I was having trouble keeping motivated.
the music was composed and recorded by my talented father James Fourie
looking back on this animation that I made before I started studying, I can see many ways it could be improved! That is encouraging, as I must have learned something in 3 years of animation school
a few things I enjoyed about this project:
- learning After Effects
- using paper to create a mostly 2d, slightly 3D stopmotion world
- experimenting with materials, especially for the textures of the buildings outside, the roofing, and the way the light shines through it all at different times of the day.
